Stress is the body’s natural response to pressure or demands. It is often triggered by external situations such as work deadlines, financial concerns, or major life changes and typically involves both physical and emotional reactions, including tension, irritability and difficulty relaxing. Unlike anxiety which can persist even without a clear cause and may feel constant or overwhelming, stress is usually linked to specific circumstances and tends to ease once the situation has been resolved.
Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged and excessive stress, often related to work or caregiving responsibilities. It can leave people feeling drained, detached, unmotivated and increasingly unable to cope with everyday demands. Unlike short-term stress, burnout tends to build gradually and can affect self-esteem, productivity, and overall wellbeing.
Therapy can help individuals manage stress and burnout effectively by exploring and identifying the causes of these experiences, such as overcommitment, lack of boundaries, or unmet needs. Approaches can support individuals in recognising unhelpful patterns, setting healthier limits and developing practical coping strategies which can help restore balance, regain energy and reconnect with a sense of purpose.
