Anger

Anger and Maternal Rage

Problematic anger refers to anger that feels intense, frequent, or difficult to control, and begins to negatively affect a person’s relationships, work or overall wellbeing. While anger itself is a normal human emotion, it becomes problematic when it leads to frequent outbursts, aggression or prolonged resentments, or when it masks other underlying feelings such as hurt, stress, or fear. Maternal rage refers to intense feelings of anger, frustration or overwhelm experienced by mothers, often in response to the sustained pressures of care-giving, lack of support, sleep deprivation or unmet emotional needs. Maternal rage can feel sudden, consuming and difficult to control sometimes leading to guilt or shame afterwards.

Therapy can help manage problematic anger and maternal rage by providing a non-judgemental space to explore these feelings, understand their triggers and reduce self-blame. Approaches can help support people to develop healthier coping strategies, improving emotional regulation, enhancing communication skills and building practical tools to manage stress.
